Women's Leadership and Health

Since 2010, Senegal has had a law on absolute parity that requires the strict alternation of male and female candidates on the electoral lists for all elected bodies. Since the November 2024 elections, women have held

41,21 %

seats in the National Assembly—one of the highest proportions in West Africa. (Source: Inter-Parliamentary Union, ipu.org/fr/parlement/SN)

Women spend

4 hours and 12 minutes per day

on household chores, compared with 32 minutes for men—a ratio of 8 to 1, well above the sub-Saharan average (3.1 to 1). In rural northern areas, this can reach up to 12 hours a day. 45% of women care for a sick or disabled family member. (Source: UN Women, “Care Snapshots”)

Senegal has one of the best track records in French-speaking Africa in the fight against malaria: between 2015 and 2024, the country reduced by

46,9 %

its number of cases and a 46.9% decrease in the number of deaths related to the disease—the sharpest decline in the subregion after Rwanda. (Source: WHO, World Malaria Report 2025)
