Women's Leadership and Health

The country is undergoing a period of political transition. The Transitional Legislative Assembly (renamed the People's Legislative Assembly in March 2026) consists of

13

women out of 71 appointed members, or approximately 18.3 percent. This falls short of the legal quota of 30 percent women on electoral lists established by Law No. 003-2020/AN (applicable to future elections). (Source: Inter-Parliamentary Union, Parline)

According to the World Economic Forum's 2024 Global Gender Gap Report, Burkina Faso ranks

120th

out of 146 countries in terms of the gender gap.

The Afrobarometer surveys (January 2026) confirm that the

inequalities

Access to economic and political opportunities remains a major challenge for women in Burkina Faso, despite the government’s National Strategy for Gender Equality 2020–2024.

Burkina Faso has one of the highest incidence rates in the world, with

353,5

malaria cases per 1,000 people in 2024, and a mortality rate of 0.69 per 1,000 people, placing the country among the ten nations hardest hit by the disease. (Source: WHO, World Malaria Report 2025)
