Community-based organizations for women and girls are on the front lines. They understand the realities on the ground, build trust within communities, and bring those communities’ needs to the decision-making table. Yet they most often operate with limited resources and restrictive funding that focuses on the implementation of activities.
This model overlooks what makes an organization strong over the long term: its teams, its tools, and its procedures. Yet it is precisely these foundations that technical and financial partners examine before committing their support. An organization capable of justifying every expense, linking its budget lines to its objectives, and reporting rigorously is an organization that can be trusted more fully.
Strengthening civil society organizations is therefore much more than just one-time support. It means giving them the means to take a significant step forward: moving from initial funding to more ambitious partnerships, and from one-time projects to sustainable action.

This is the very essence of the significant support provided by Voix EssentiELLES: unrestricted funding that covers both implementation and operating costs, supplemented by technical assistance from the Université de l’ExcELLEnce, so that partner organizations can strengthen both their institutional capacity and their impact on the ground.
This is the case for the Association for Keeping Girls in School (AMFE), which works in the Matam region to ensure that girls have access to education and remain in school. Voix EssentiELLES was its first source of funding. This support enabled the organization to structure its work, prove its effectiveness, and gain institutional maturity. Building on this foundation, the organization was able to mobilize other partners, eventually securing a 448 million CFA francs project dedicated to keeping girls in school.
AMFE’s journey illustrates a core belief of Voix EssentiELLES: an initial investment in a community-based organization can have a lasting multiplier effect, provided that the organization is equipped to turn one partner’s trust into a springboard to others.
The funds provided by Voix EssentiELLES require transparent and reliable management that complies with the laws of each country as well as the requirements of donors. With this in mind, Speak Up Africa organized a capacity-building mission focused on administrative and financial management in Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.
Led by Speak Up Africa’s program and finance teams, the sessions focused on:
The approach was designed to be decidedly practical: interactive presentations, group work, and practical case studies based on situations that organizations encounter on a daily basis and on their needs, which had been identified in advance.

At the end of these sessions, partner organizations walk away with concrete takeaways:
These achievements extend beyond the scope of Voix EssentiELLES. Clear procedures, documented expenditures, and reliable reports are the common language shared by all technical and financial partners. By mastering these, organizations gain greater autonomy, credibility, and the ability to seize new opportunities.
Because ensuring that women’s voices are heard in decision-making forums also requires strong organizations to champion them. Through Voix EssentiELLES, Speak Up Africa continues to invest in these foundations, convinced that today’s dedication paves the way for tomorrow’s successes.
